Last Thursday night, the community of heavy music lovers, industry peeps and performers gathered at Camden’s KOKO to celebrate the genre’s best artists over the past twelve months.
Now running in its second year, The Heavy Music Awards crown the UK’s most outstanding bands, international favourites as well as honouring those who go the extra mile for their community. All nominees are selected by a panel of industry professionals and then the fans get to vote for their winners. Over 100,000 votes were registered, blowing last year’s numbers completely out of the water.
One of the most special wins of the night was While She Sleeps’ award for Best Album with their crowd-funded and independently released You Are We. Not only did their fans help them win this award but they were the ones who helped the band be able to record and release it in the first place.
A very special shoutout also goes to the Sophie Lancaster Foundation for winning the H award – a community award. Sophie and her boyfriend were brutally attacked and killed in 2007 by a group of teenage boys simply for how she dressed.
The ceremony was framed by the stunning performances of an incredible selection of bands. Kicking things off were Kent quartet Coldbones, followed by Best UK Breakthrough Band winners Milk Teeth and Brighton prog-rockers Black Peaks.
To put a cherry on top of a truly celebratory evening, Cali hard-core punks The Fever 333 delivered a show-stopping performance that encompassed quite literally the entire venue including the sounddesk on the balcony.
