So long and goodnight no more, MCR are back and our emo hearts have burst.
Of all days to pick to announce their reunion, Halloween couldn’t have been a better choice. Emo icons My Chemical Romance today announced their return to the stage with an intimate show at Los Angeles’ Shrine Expo Hall on 20 December. It will mark their first show since 2012 and will truly crown 2019 its long-hailed title of twenty-nine-scene. The band had been teasing fans throughout the day when they created an Instagram account and shared various stories until the big reveal.
In 2013, when the band announced their break-up (some of us still have emo-PTSD from it), Gerard Way ended his note about the announcement with the words “My Chemical Romance is done. But it can never die. It is alive in me, in the guys, and it is alive inside all of you. I always knew that, and I think you did too. Because it is not a band—it is an idea.”
Since then the members have each had their own solo projects, most recently Gerard Way celebrated a successful first season of The Umbrella Academy, the screen adaptation of his comic book series. Frank Iero just last month toured the UK with his new band and new album on a co-headline tour with Laura Jane Grace.
Here’s to hoping, for the sake of our overjoyed emo hearts, that My Chemical Romance will bring their reunion to the UK.
